"Do you know when you'll be interviewing the band?" a message pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their extra sister."

However, there remains one problem: The author likewise desires to be Haim's additional sibling. And we're not alone. Several celebrated admirers have also begged for the role.

The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their path performing shows at small eateries with their parents. Today, they are repeated Grammy contenders.

Like all the greatest bands, they're a tight-knit unit. Their music videos often depict them marching in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such unfettered exuberance you can't help but think, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members told us and said, 'After your show, I got a guitar'," states Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "It is the ultimate honor. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage young girls to form a group."

"So anyone is invited to be the fourth Haim sister."

Grammy Recognition

The trio are connecting from their homes, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in contention for the award.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the accolade resonates with the trio.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant step," adds Alana. "But we're just grateful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The project came out of a phase of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that strange liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The words detail breakups and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they aspire to be.

"I love description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to actively work on shutting out the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That recent resilience required a different sonic direction – more raw and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Humor

The band's honesty shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic misadventures.

One man ended things with Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Path

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their position in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an worldwide following.

However Haim will consistently be their top focus.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was a young child," shares Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
