The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
